Sinus Augmentation

Sinus Augmentation

A sinus bone graft, also known as a sinus lift or sinus augmentation, is a surgical procedure performed to increase the amount of bone in the upper jaw in the area of the molars and premolars. This procedure is often necessary when there is insufficient bone height in the upper jaw to support dental implants.

During a sinus bone grafting procedure, Dr. James will access the sinus cavity through the upper jawbone and lift the sinus membrane upward. Bone graft material, typically a synthetic material or bone taken from another part of the body or a donor source, is then placed in the space created between the jawbone and the sinus membrane. This bone graft material helps stimulate new bone growth and provides a stable foundation for dental implants.

After the bone grafting procedure, a healing period of several months is usually required to allow the new bone to integrate and become strong enough to support dental implants. Once the bone has healed sufficiently, dental implants can be placed in the augmented area to restore function and aesthetics to the patient’s smile.

Sinus bone grafting is a common and effective procedure that allows patients with insufficient bone in the upper jaw to benefit from dental implant placement and achieve a stable and long-lasting tooth replacement solution.

Post-Operative Care Following A Sinus Augmentation:

Following a sinus augmentation procedure you will be provided with specific post-operative care instructions to promote healing and reduce the risk of complications. Some common post-operative care guidelines for sinus augmentation may include:

1. Pain Management: Patients may be prescribed pain medication to manage any discomfort following the procedure. It is important to take the medication as directed by the oral surgeon.

2. Swelling and Bruising: Swelling and bruising around the surgical site are common after sinus augmentation. Applying ice packs to the affected area and keeping the head elevated can help reduce swelling.

3. Oral Hygiene: Patients should follow specific instructions provided by the oral surgeon for oral hygiene following sinus augmentation. This may include gentle rinsing with saltwater or a prescribed mouthwash to keep the surgical site clean.

4. Sinus Precautions: It is important that you take the medications provided to you by Dr. James, these likely include an antibiotic to help prevent infection, a nasal decongestant to help keep your nose clear as you should not blow your nose for at least two weeks after the procedure. Along with not blowing your nose, if you need to sneeze, do so with an open nose and mouth to prevent trauma to the sinuses.

5. Follow-Up Appointments: Patients should schedule and attend follow-up appointments with the oral surgeon to monitor healing progress and ensure that the surgical site is healing properly.

6. Activity Restrictions: Patients may be advised to avoid strenuous physical activity and heavy lifting for a period of time following sinus augmentation to prevent complications.

It is important for patients to carefully follow all post-operative care instructions provided by the team at James Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery to promote optimal healing and reduce the risk of complications. If any concerns or complications arise during the recovery period, patients should contact their surgical team promptly for further guidance.
