Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, are the final set of molars that typically emerge in the late teens or early twenties. These teeth are located at the back of the mouth and are often associated with pain and discomfort due to their tendency to become impacted or grow in at awkward angles. Wisdom teeth serve little to no functional purpose in modern humans and are often recommended for removal to prevent potential dental issues such as overcrowding, misalignment, and infection. It is important to consult with an Oral Surgeon to determine the best course of action regarding wisdom teeth.

Post-Operative Care

After having wisdom teeth extracted, it is important to follow post-operative care instructions to promote healing and reduce the risk of complications. Here are some general guidelines for post-operative care:

1. Bleeding:
Some bleeding is normal after extractions. Bite down on a gauze pad placed over the extraction site for about 30-45 minutes to help control bleeding. If bleeding persists, replace the gauze pad and continue applying pressure.

2. Pain Management:
Pain and discomfort are common after wisdom teeth extraction. Take any prescribed pain medication as directed by your oral surgeon. Over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen can also help alleviate pain.

3. Swelling:
Swelling is normal after the procedure. Apply an ice pack to the affected area for 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off for the first 24 hours to help reduce swelling.

4. Diet:
Stick to soft foods and liquids for the first few days after the extraction. Avoid hot, spicy, or hard foods that may irritate the extraction site.

5. Oral Hygiene:
Gently rinse your mouth with warm salt water or medicated mouth rinse several times a day starting 24 hours after the extraction to keep the area clean. Avoid vigorous rinsing or spitting, as this can dislodge blood clots and delay healing.

6. Activity:

Rest and avoid strenuous activities for the first few days after the extraction to allow for proper healing.

7. Follow-Up:
Attend any follow-up appointments scheduled by your oral surgeon to monitor healing and address any concerns.

It is essential to follow these guidelines and any specific instructions provided by Dr. James and his team to ensure a smooth recovery process. If you experience severe pain, excessive bleeding, persistent swelling, or any other concerning symptoms, contact your team at James Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery immediately.
